Lofting is the term used to describe a very smooth, and sensual “Freestyle” form of dancing that is said to have originated at a Legendary underground dance party known as The Loft (began 1970′s, NYC) hosted by David Mancuso.

Although many of the Original Members of the The Loft never claimed to have developed this particular style of dancing. Lofting is the term onlookers naturally coined in reference to a shared vocabulary of dance movement that combined elements of “Contemporary/Modern Dance, Gymnastics, Martial Arts, Latin Dance” and possibly many other incorporated styles.

The Loft dancers of 99 Prince St. (one of the most notable Loft Party locations), are some of the dancers we have come to recognize as pioneers of Lofting, despite if they have not claimed it so, as some may prefer to regard their dancing at The Loft as simply “Freestyle” dancing.
